Zhang Yimou is out of ideas
Story-wise I gave a C-. This movie is based on a famous contemporary Chinese drama but changed the time back to Tang Dynasty, which made the story very unrealistic for that time. For example, it looks like anyone can easily get into the forbiddencity -- hello, where's the homeland security? Like many other Chinese movies, every character in the movie knows Kungfu -- even the old Queen who turns out to be a Kungfu master! I'm sorry for her husband who spent tens of years with her but never find out the real identity of this lady with a prisoner mark on her face.
Acting is pretty much what I expected -- B-. Among all these big stars prince Jai (the second son) is a real Gem.
With his background in photography, Zhang knows how to attract eyeballs. I want to give him an A in visual because of the extremely ornate spectacles, but that bloody fighting scene offsets it. Sorry, only B here.
Direction is mediocre. The whole movie is more of a pile of extreme visual effects to me -- that seems to be a problem with most of the Chinese movies made to US market for the past 2 years: they seemed to learn from "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon" that presentation is important, but missed what really tells and sells the story. If you are looking for real Chinese stories, go for independant movies like "Crazy Stone" or "Beijing Bicycle".
Overall, C for mediocre.
